Cake Pops - Making & Decorating

Making Cake Pops

Cake Pops is a fun way to create edible treats for your special occasions. We love them because everyone gets a homemade single serving with all the decorations. You will have endless ideas in decorating, along with displaying them at your event.

Here is the quick and simple way to create these one-of-a-kind mini cake pops.

In this tutorial, we created bunny pops, sprinkle pops, cake balls in mini liners and cake pop cones. We added leaf green coloring to our cake mix to give it a green color when you bite into the cake ball.

Step #1

Using a cake mix or cake recipe, bake the cake on a cookie sheet (about 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees). Allow to cool.

Step #2

Crumble the cake into small bits and place in a bowl.

 Step #3

Add one tub of store bought frosting (any flavor). Mix well. Put in the refrigerator for at least one hour to firm the dough.

Step #4

Form the cake dough into small balls. Most cake balls are about 1 to 1.5 inch round. Place on a cookie sheet. If using cookie sticks, place them in now. Place cookie sheet in the freezer for at least one hour.

Step #5

Using candy melts (any flavor or color), melt in the microwave at 20 second intervals. You will need at least one 14 oz. bag of candy melts to dip all the cake balls. Stir melts after each 20 second interval. When almost completely melted, take out of microwave and continue stirring until all the candy is melted.

Take cake balls out of the freezer. If you are adding any edible decorations, have them ready to add. You will only have a few seconds to stick them on the cake ball once you have dipped it. The candy cools quickly.

Step #6

Dip the cake balls into the melted candy. Turn the stick and tap on the side of the bowl until all the excess has dripped off. Some decorators use a spoon to pour the melted candy over. Either method is fine.

Add your edible decorations now. If you will be using an edible marker to write or draw a design - wait until candy has dried and become firm.
